Danish doom magicians KATLA bring a new dimension of Doom with their new album Scandinavian Pain! Their powerful brew of post-rock, sludge and progressive doom is characterized by intense, atmospheric sounds in long, expansive tracks.
Scandinavian Pain deals with dark themes such as depression, shame, greed and guilt. The trio tells stories of the end of the world and religious manipulation, even reaching back to the colonial era. On the cover, which is stylistically reminiscent of early black metal, the black dog is an atmospheric symbol of melancholy. This motif comes from the English writer and poet Dr. Samuel Johnson. In the folklore of his homeland, the dog is regarded as the bearer of bad omens, a demon that lurks in the night and spreads darkness and terror wherever it roams – the dog from hell, just as dark and groovy as the music of KATLA.
Drummer Rasmus Bang brings the right drive with his dynamic drumming. His rough vocals complement the bass playing of Theis Stenberg Thorgersen, whose low strings bring the listener to their knees. This sound framework is rounded off by Marc Lennart Christensen with his powerful, distorted guitar, creating a dense soundscape in the vastness of darkness. But the three Danes can also show another side: a humorous and extremely entertaining intro provides a slightly different kind of relaxation.
